2008 Learning in the Outdoors Events These events will help you discover and experience our natural and cultural heritage. Monarchs and Migrants Weekend August 30th and 31st, 2008 September 14th and 24th, 2008 Haliburton Rocks! This hike offers a once-in-a-lifetime tour of undisturbed deposits of fluorrichterite, orthoclase, tremolite, actinolite, apatite and quartz. Hosts Sandra and Mark Bramham, will interpret the geological history and reveal the unspoiled beauty of this extraordinary site. Join us as we bike Peterborough’s historic rail trails to discover some fascinating places and people who have made our City great. Explore the bridges that once carried the people and freight that helped build our area. Listen as tour guide Bruce Fitzpatrick regales you with entertaining tales of the history of rail and water transport in this region as you enjoy a leisurely paced afternoon. Salmon River Canoe Paddle Sunday, September 28th, 2008 Join local naturalist and canoeing/kayaking enthusiast Terry Sprague as he guides you on an interpretive paddle up the Salmon River, from Roblin to Croydon. This scenic quiet stretch of the river is full of colour in the fall and a delight to paddle. Rub shoulders with some of the river's inhabitants and learn about the wildflowers along the way, as well as the river's history. Look at some of the incredible flora and fauna along the way - great blue herons, water willow, painted turtles, and buttonbush. We will have lunch near an old bridge ruins where the river is but a trickle, before returning back to our cars. Please bring your own canoe. more... Deep Roots Relay Saturday, October 4th, 2008 A family fundraiser event where team members complete different legs of the 25 km relay that starts at Maynooth Railway Station in the north and ends at Bancroft Railway Station in the south. Participants will discover clues to the past along the route to win prizes. Fund raised will go towards the restoration of the Maynooth Railway Station, Bancroft Railway Station, and local youth projects.
