Outdoor Enthusiasts Win Great Prizes

Four happy hikers who participated in the 2008 Passport to Trail Adventure and Great Gear Giveaway Contest will tell you that getting outdoors and active on trails can pay dividends.  Beth Dekoker of Cambridge, Maria Garrett of Cobourg, and Bruce Williamson and Bob Short of Port Hope had their names drawn for prizes that included GPS units, binoculars, a bicycle, and a $1000 gift certificate from the Canadian Tire Store. First and second prize winners, Bob Short and Bruce Williamson were in Lindsay today for a special presentation.

The Great Gear Giveaway Contest was a feature of the 2008 Celebration of Trails, an autumn festival of trail events that happened in 9 Counties and Regional Municipalities from Kingston to Keswick.  The thousands of hikers, walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers, canoeists, kayakers, and horseback riders who participated in one or more of the 50 events that took place on trails during the fall months were eligible for valuable prizes.  “Each event I participated in qualified me to enter the contest more often” observed Bob Short, the winner of the $1000 gift certificate. “I went on eight different hikes”

“What a great way to get people out on the wonderful trails we have in this part of Ontario”, says John Fox, General Manager of the Canadian Tire store in Lindsay, “We are very happy to support this contest and the Celebration of Trails”.

“The Celebration of Trails offers something for everyone”, notes Andrew Wallen, Chair of the Celebration and General Manager of the Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation.  “The variety of activities you can do on trails is almost limitless. At the same time, these events promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles, and enhance local economies by attracting tourists.”

The Celebration of Trails is a regional initiative of the Community Future Development Corporations (CFDC) of Eastern Ontario with support from 26 contributing partners from local government, tourism, trail, heath and economic development sectors; 43 event partners; 4 corporate sponsors; and funding from the Eastern Ontario Development Program, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the Ontario Government through the Trails for Life, Communities in Action, and Celebrate Ontario programs.
